Luke, Lindy, and Kevin are happy to invite you again or perhaps for your very first time to the heart of Coquitlam for 2022’s first of the year in BC event for cubing, competing and connecting together! It is spring and we are bringing cubing back to BC!
Welcome upcoming competitors and guests to the BC Cubing Springback A 2022 (or B!)
Both A and B competitions are part of a Series Competition. Both fall over the Victoria Day May Long Weekend, with Competition A scheduled for the Sunday and Competition B for the Monday Statutory Holiday here in this province. Registration is permitted only for ONE of these series competitions; no competitor may register for both but must choose A (Sunday May 22) OR choose B (Monday May 23 stat holiday Victoria Day).
This competition is in part a show of support for the Ukrainian people at this time. Each registered competitor paying a competition fee allows cubers all together to make a charitable contribution to the World Food Programme Ukraine Emergency Appeal. Help is urgently needed for providing emergency food and water to Ukraine and the neighbouring countries affected by the war and its devastating humanitarian crisis. We pledge to donate 20% of all competition fees collected to go toward this important, very needy appeal. See the World Food Programme website.
The recent and greatly anticipated changes to BC Public Health Order which applies also to social gatherings and events means that we will not be seeking the proof of vaccination status of competitors and guests in May. Happily, masking will be an option at the venue as well. As an expected and still valuable courtesy, we simply ask that those experiencing any COVID-19 like symptoms or those with a recent positive COVID-19 test refrain from attending. Competitors may arrange with the organisational team for a full refund if they need to opt out due to the onset of illness or a positive test. Naturally we have a Staying Health Informed tab here on the website to share any useful considerations pertaining to personal wellness at the competition and as a place to communicate any additional changes to the new health order - if the government re-introduces restrictions such as proof of vaccination or masks, we will update the website and email registered competitiors.
Registration with a $25 CDN payment through Stripe opens Friday April 1st 6:00pm PST.
Note that registration will close one week later. No on the spot registrations will be accepted.
Registration is first come, first served based on the order of when payment through Stripe is received.
A waitlist will be maintained for those unable to secure a spot in the competition.

The base registration fee for this competition is $25 (Canadian Dollar).
If your registration is cancelled before you will be refunded 50% of your registration fee.
Registrants on the waiting list may be accepted onto the competitor list until .

No on the spot registrations will be accepted.
Spectators are only permitted as companions of competitors.
Again, this is a Series Competition and you may only register for one of the pair. Make sure you don't mix them up; this is A, on Sunday.

A competitor or guest has had a recent positive COVID-19 test or is experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 such as cough, fever, shortness of breath, nausea, etc. should NOT attend this competition.
If you need to cancel your registration due to the onset of any COVID-19 symptoms and/or testing positive for COVID-19 (cough, fever, chills, nausea, etc) even on the weekend of the competition, let us, your oganisers, know and we will arrange a FULL refund for you.
We will not be seeking proof of vaccination status of any registered competitor or guest in the venue. Come as you are...but symptom free and feeling well, of course!
Facial masking is no longer legally required at this time in BC in public indoor settings. If you are comfortable in a mask, by all means wear one, but this will in no ways be an expectation.
When not competing, competitors and spectators can show consideration to others by whenever possible maintaining a 3 ft distance from others.
You are encouraged not to frequently swap and share puzzles with other competitors.
Hand sanitizer and disinfection wipes will be widely available for use at the competitor's pleasure.
The competition will be using a fixed seating system, rather than a standard waiting area. This means when competing, competitors will complete all attempts in one sitting with the same judge, instead of being called to a different station for each attempt.
The organisational team will be overseeing procedures that relate to cleanliness, such as utilising sanitizer at intervals and wiping down solving stations at points throughout the day.

Walton Elementary is a K-5 English/Mandarin bilingual elementary school located in a quiet neighbourhood in the heart of Coquitlam behind the bustling Coquitlam Center mall and surrounding parks, restaurants and retail outlets. It is conveniently within walking distance or a very short drive from the Lincoln Millenium Line Skytrain Station.
Check out Walton on Google maps to note the many and various amenities in the area….especially the eateries including grocery stores and quick serve restaurants so handy for grabbing snacks as time allows during the competition day or for your full meal during our just under one hour lunch break!
For those of you new to cubing - WELCOME! This competition is fine for cubers of any age and experience. We just ask you to be aware of these basics before coming to compete... First, please be familiar with the WCA Regulations.
Of course, those regulations contain a lot of legalese, so we have a video made specifically for new cubers, just to show the basics of competing. This video will explain most of what any cuber competing for the first time will need to know.

Q: Do I use my own cubes to compete?
A: YES! You are responsible for your own hardware in order to compete and to be similarly responsible for its whereabouts at the competition venue.
Q: What is the competition like?
A; Competitions like this one have a bunch of tables where cubers like us get to sit, discuss and practice our favorite thing: cubes! The actual competing with timers, mats and displays is on one side of the gym. The competing is split up into groups, so as to better organize who competes when. Specific cube events and their aimed for start times will be posted and on your name tag, but you will also need to listen for when your event and your group is called.
Q: How do I find results?
A: Data recorders will compile and present all results at WCA Live. We will add a link here in the days leading up to the competition, and also include it in the pre-competition email.
Q: Are there age divisions?
A: Nope! All competitors compete in the same group.
Q: Can I have fun at this event?
A: ABSOLUTELY YES! Cubing is amazing, and we sincerely hope you enjoy the competition!

Two that we wish to highlight for this competition are these:
1) The competitor must have no physical contact with the puzzle cover while starting the attempt on Blindfolded events.
2) Require the competitor to finish signing (not just for the judge to finish signing) before the competitor may reset the timer.
Within the pandemic, the WCA advised the following as part of their Temporary Regulations. We have found these to be sensible practices going forward and as such will be encouraging these during this competition:
1) There will be fixed seating for all events, with no competitor waiting area. Competitors will perform all solves for a particular round at the same station and remain there between solves.
2) Competitors should refrain from touching the surface of the solving station when they are not in the process of an official attempt.
3) Judges should refrain from touching the puzzle at all times.
4) Judges will ask the competitor to prepare the timer for each attempt (turning on/off, resetting as necessary).
5) After finishing an attempt, if there are more attempts to be done, the competitor must place the puzzle inside the cover.
6) Each competitor should have a pen of his or her own. ( As such, we will provide name labeled pens to all).

Particularly if you are newer to competing or to judging or need that refresher after being out of competitions for so long, please read the WCA Competition Tutorial before coming to the competition to learn for the first time or simply be reminded as a more experienced competitor about the procedures for both competing and judging.
All experienced competitors will be scheduled in by the organizers to serve as judges and scramblers. Schedules will be posted at the venue and found on the back of the prepared name tags on the day of competition.
Any new or newer competitors will be scheduled in to be judges only (no scrambling or running) and are asked to be at the venue no later than 8:30am to take in the live judging tutorial hosted by our delegate. Similarly schedules for new or newer competitors to judge will be posted at the venue and found on the back of the prepared name tags on the day of competition.
Serving in these essential roles - including on the spot invitations to both competitors and attendees to assist the organizer as co-runners - makes for a smooth and excellently run competition for all. Thank you in advance for your help!!!!
Be reminded that both A and B competitions fall over the Victoria Day May Long Weekend, with Competition A scheduled for the Sunday and Competition B for the Monday Statutory Holiday here in this province.
Reduced numbers (60) over each of two days as opposed to a traditional larger single day competition (perhaps 80-90) assists organizers and the delegate in planning for a very large total number of competitors (up to 120) while not overcrowding venue space. Series competitions ultimately allow for more competitors, more guests, more fun!
Identical schedules and events are planned for both days, but competitors may only compete in ONE, not both, of the competitions If an attempt is made to register for both dates, one of the registrations will be promptly rejected.
Please do not show up to a competition that you are not competing at, unless you are a guest of a competitor, as spectators are strongly suggested to not exceed two per competitor.
Often desire to compete exceeds registration vacancies- yes, even in Series Competitions like this one!

IF YOU DO NOT GET A CONFIRMATION OF SUCCESSFUL REGISTRATION, YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE WAITLISTED. Your name is not lost or forgotten. You do not need to be in touch. The organisers will notify you if a spot for you becomes available.
This waitlist will be maintained for those who secure waitlist registration by making payment in the event a competitor vacancy opens up.
Competitors will be accepted from the waitlist in the order that they paid.
Competitors who do not make it off of the waitlist will receive a 100% refund shortly before the competition starts.
OUR REGISTRATION WINDOW IS ONE WEEK, FROM FRIDAY APRIL 1- FRIDAY APRIL 8. No registrations and no further waitlisted hopefuls will be added at all after Friday April 8 at 6pm.
