We thank you for your patience as the Board has been discussing and receiving input from Leaders and Seniors regarding the current COVID-19 situation.

The WCA is proud to present our new Competition Safety Policy with which we are asking all Staff members and competitors to familiarize themselves as competitions are reintroduced to their local communities. All competitions must adhere to this policy until it is revoked by the WCA Board.

The safety of our competitors and Staff are paramount to ensure that competitions will be successful into the future. Although competitions may look different, we still hope to celebrate the joy of cubing together as we can. Please reach out to us if you have any questions about the safety policies.

Dear WCA Community,

The WCA Regulations Committee would like to inform you about a new version of the WCA Regulations and Guidelines, which are going into effect August 1, 2020.

The WRC has been working on a new WCA Regulations and Guidelines amendment in conjunction with the WCA Board of Directors. This amendment is meant to complement the WCA Competition Safety Policy and to guarantee safer conditions in WCA Competitions in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

You can review all changes in this comparison on GitHub. You can click on “Files changed” to see the complete files of the Regulation and Guidelines, where all changes and additions are marked green and removals are red.

Here is a summary of the changes in the new version of the Regulations and the Guidelines (commit | discussion):

  • A new article Y is added to the Regulations which complements the Safety Policy. It is expected that the changes will be reverted once it is safe to do so.
  • WCA Delegates can impose additional requirements on attendees like wearing masks or not having COVID symptoms, if it is necessary and if it is clearly announced before the competition (Regulations Y3 and Y3a through Y3d).
  • The competitor resets the timer instead of the judge. The judge reminds the competitor to do so (Regulation Y7d1).
  • Competitors who behave unsafely might be disqualified by the WCA Delegate (Regulation 2k3) and requested to leave the venue (Regulation 11h).
  • Some additions that make the Regulations more inline with the Safety Policy:
    • Competitors should bring their own pens (Regulation Y4), judges may bring their own stopwatches (Regulation Y5).
    • Competitors, without touching the scoresheet, must sign the result recorded by their judge using their own pen (Regulation Y7e1).
    • There should be fixed seats and there shouldn’t be a Competitor Area if unnecessary (Regulations Y6a, Y7a).
    • The competitor places the puzzle inside the cover after the attempt (Regulation Y7f).

We are excited to announce the launch of the WCA Forum, a project that the WCA Advisory Council has worked hard to create for the community!

The WAC hopes to use this tool to improve the connection between WCA Staff and the Community. It is a space for all WCA members to join together to discuss topics such as competitions, records, regulations, and more. This is also a great place to connect with others in your regional community. Most importantly for the WCA, this is a place where everyone gets to have their say as we make changes to our organization for the future.

We invite you to log in, explore the site, and get involved in some conversations. Thank you for your continued support of our organization!

Given recent escalations of the COVID-19 situation over the past couple weeks and to support the global effort to slow the spread of the virus, the Board has unanimously agreed to extend competition restrictions.

All competitions already announced where the first day of the competition is May 31, 2020 or earlier will be cancelled with immediate effect. In addition, new competitions will only be approved if the first date of the competition is June 1, 2020 or later.

We are encouraged by the initiatives being seen within the community such as online competitions, virtual meets and live streams. We wholeheartedly support and encourage these and are urging more WCA Staff to get involved with these events to support the community. Please keep checking our website for more announcements about these events.

We hope everyone in the community is staying safe by following the directives of their local governments and the World Health Organization. Thank you for your understanding during these unprecedented times.

Due to the current situation regarding COVID-19 and the measures taken by many governments to confine people to their homes, several members of the WCA community have started projects to keep the competitive spirit alive in cubing! Please note that these competitions are not sanctioned or monitored by the WCA and do not have to abide by WCA regulations. The results will not count towards your WCA profile.

The information about upcoming unofficial competitions has been moved to the WCA Forum. If you would like to submit your upcoming event, please create a topic on the Forum!

Stay home and safe.

Dear WCA Community,

The Board of Directors would like to make a few announcements regarding the ever changing situation which is unfolding around the world with COVID-19.

Given the rapid pace of change and action from local governments being taken to combat COVID-19 the Board has decided to cancel all competitions between now and April 19th. Additionally we have decided to not allow any submissions of competitions with a starting date between now and May 15th given the high likelihood that these competitions would be faced with cancellation.

It is worth noting that the Board sees a very high likelihood that these deadlines will be extended and further cancellations will be required.

We encourage you to practice social distancing and stay as safe as you can within your communities.

Thank you for your understanding,
The Board of Directors
